Well there is a lot that can be done, but its a lot better than my first site 
First thing that pops up in my mind is, to me it looks like you are using 2 maybe even 3 different font types on you site, thats a lot when thinking the site is not rich on text content.
that said for your next site, try looking around at some of the web galleries on the internet, get inspired for the next design, you can learn a lot by looking around.
Ok, that’s almost a meaningless question (no offense). A database is where you create, read, update, and delete DATA. The design is just server or client side code + images.
My very strong suggestion is to google “Magento Go.” It’s a CMS that will get your site up and running quickly provided you can learn it (it has a very small learning curve).
